שיעורי טקסט Rav Yair Kahn Parashat Vayishlach: Coming Home In the story of Jacob and his return flight from Haran, we find many repetitions. Thus, for example, leaving Haran is described twice, with changes of the city's name from Luz to Bet El and from Yaakov to Yisrael. These and other changes can be interpreted on the local level, but we will try to explain them in light of the two reasons for Jacob's departure - and therefore return – his flight from Esau, on the one hand, and the search for an appropriate wife, on the other.
שיעורי טקסט Rav Yoel Bin-Nun War and Morality: Yisrael in the Land In advance of encountering his brother Esav, Yaakov "prepares for war." In this shiur, we will discuss what this entails according to the commentaries, as well as the implications of this story in modern times. What can we learn from Yaakov's attitude to warfare as he returns to Eretz Canaan?
שיעורי טקסט Rav Gad Eldad “I Am God Almighty” – How God Introduces Himself In this shiur, we will study the various "introduction ceremonies" that God conducts with the patriarchs. These ceremonies emphasize the strong connection that God sought to create with them and the covenant that He made with them in giving them the land.
שיעורי טקסט Harav Yaakov Medan The Incident in Shekhem The attack on Shekhem is one of the most stunning acts of violence in the Torah -- but was it revenge, punishment or something else?
שיעורי טקסט Rav Yoel Bin-Nun The Yabok Crossing The commentators debate a number of questions regarding the events at the beginning of our parasha. In this shiur, we will discuss their differing views regarding the identity of the "malakhim," Yaakov's ultimate plan, and the meaning of the struggle by the Yabok stream.

שיעורי טקסט Rav Amnon Bazak Yosef – From Potifar’s House to Prison On his journey from the pit to the position of second-in-command to Pharaoh, Yosef passes through two stations: the house of Potifar and the prison. In both places, he is recognized by the most senior character, who places his full confidence in him. In both instances, his faith in God is tested and he withstands the test. In both cases, despite passing the test, he suffers some further punishment. What is the significance of these two stages?
שיעורי טקסט Rav Gad Eldad "Your descendants shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs" The Fulfillment of the Decree of Bondage in Egypt In this shiur, we will examine the story of the descent of Yosef to Egypt, focusing on how the events of his life reflect the parallel paths of man's free will and God's direction of world events.
