Teacher Title Abstract Course
Rav David Sabato Shiur #25: The Last Days of Jerusalem (Chapter 37) In this shiur, we will study chapter 37, in which we begin to learn about the final days of Jerusalem. The story describes King Tzidkiyahu's request of Yirmeyahu to pray on behalf of the city, which was under siege, and Yirmeyahu's refusal to do so. We will compare this interaction to that of Chizkiyahu and Yeshayahu. In particular, we will note how this story reflects the tragic persona of Yirmeyahu, who is repeatedly accused of being a false prophet and of treason, despite the fact that he is the only one speaking the truth. Yirmeyahu – The Book of Jeremiah
Rav David Sabato Shiur #26: The Last Days of Jerusalem – Part II (Chapter 38) Chapter 38 takes place at the very height of the second Babylonian siege of Jerusalem, which ended with the conquest and destruction of the city. We will first study the chapter in its immediate context. We will then compare it to chapter 37, which is similar to it in many of its details, and finally we will compare the story of Yirmeyahu here to the story of Yosef. Yirmeyahu – The Book of Jeremiah
Rav David Sabato Shiur #27: The Destruction of Jerusalem and the Fate of Yirmeyahu (Chapters 39-40) In this shiur, we will study the accounts of the destruction recorded in chapters 39 and 40. We will compare and contrast the accounts in these two chapters to one another, as well as to other accounts found in Tanach, and explain some of the discrepancies between them. Yirmeyahu – The Book of Jeremiah
Rav David Sabato Shiur 28: The Assassination of Gedalyahu (Chapters 40-41) In this shiur, we will discuss the appointment and subsequent assassination of Gedalya ben Akhikam. We will note the reasons that different groups had for joining Gedalya, as well as Yishmael ben Netanya's motivations for murdering him, and we will study the connections between this story and other stories in Tanakh. Yirmeyahu – The Book of Jeremiah
Rav David Sabato Shiur 29: The Assassination of Gedalyahu (Part II) In this shiur, we will study the aftermath of the assassination of Gedalya. The people turn to Yirmeyahu, who they now recognize as a true prophet, committing to listen to his guidance, but even now they fail to heed his words, leading to the complete exile of the people from the land. Yirmeyahu – The Book of Jeremiah
Rav David Sabato Shiur #30: The Prophecy Concerning the Jews of Egypt Chapter 44 describes the dialogue between Yirmeyahu and the remnant of Yehuda in Egypt, at the center of which is a prophecy of rebuke for the sin of idol worship. This is the last prophecy of Yirmeyahu to the people of Israel in the book. It includes several of the important themes of Yirmeyahu's prophecy, and it constitutes a sort of bitter summation of his prophetic mission. Yirmeyahu – The Book of Jeremiah
