The Gemara (Shabbat 22b) raises the fundamental question of whether one fulfills the mitzva of Chanuka lights through hadlaka, that is, lighting the candles, or through hanacha – by putting them, after they are lit, in their proper place.
Where should one light if (a) one is not sleeping in one's home, or (b) camping in the wilderness? And should we light in synagogues and public places?
What is the proper text of the blessing on the candles and what does it reveal about the mitzva? And what is the function of the blessing "She-assa Nissim"?
During the days of Chanuka, we add into our prayers the words:
Your children came to the Holy of Holies of Your House, and cleared Your Sanctuary, and purified Your Temple, and kindled lights in the courtyards of Your Sanctuary…
