An English translation will follow the Hebrew.

ויקרא רבה א:א

Petichta Verse

רבי תנחום בר חנילאי פתח:

ברכו ה' מלאכיו גבורי כח עושי דברו לשמוע בקול דברו (תהלים קג:כ).

מלאך A. Interpretations of the word

1) First interpretation

(2 as prophet מלאך
דבר אחר:

B. Interpretations of the phrase"גבורי כח עושי דברו" :

The rewards for keeping Shemitta

 C. Interpretations of "עושי דברו לשמוע בקול דברו"

The Greatness of the People of Israel at Mt. Sinai

1) "עושי דברו"
רבי הונא בשם ר' אחא אמר:

בישראל שעמדו לפני הר סיני הכתוב מדבר,

שהקדימו עשייה לשמיעה, ואמרו:

"כל אשר דבר ה' נעשה ונשמע"  (שמות כד:ז).

D. Conclusion - Parasha Verse

Vayikra Rabba 1:1

Petichta Verse

R. Tanhum b. Hanilai opened [his discourse with the text],

"Bless the Lord, O His angels (malakhav),

mighty in strength, that fulfill His word,

Hearkening unto the voice of His word" (Ps. 103:20).

A) Interpretations of the word malakh

1) First interpretation

Of whom does Scripture speak?

If we are to suppose that Scripture speaks of such as are above,

the question arises,  is it not in any event said:

"Bless the Lord, all His hosts" (Ps. 103:21)?

Surely, then, [when Scripture here uses the term "malakhav"], it speaks of such [malakhim] as are below.

Of those above, since they can [unfailingly] execute [all] the charges of the Holy One, blessed be He, it is said,

"Bless the Lord, all  His hosts,"

but of those below, since they are not able [unfailingly] to execute [all] the charges of the Holy One, blessed be He,

it is said, "Bless the Lord, O His angels,"

but not "All His angels."

2)  Malakh as prophet

Another interpretation:

1. The prophets are called malakhim.

This is indicated by what is written,

"And he sent a messenger (malakh), and brought us forth out of Egypt, etc." (Num. 20:16).

Was it then an angel of the Lord?

Surely it was Moses!

Why then does it call him "malakh?"

In fact, from this one learns that the prophets are called malakhim.

2. Similarly it says,

"And the messenger (malakh) of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim" (Judg. 2:1).

Was it then an angel?

Surely it was Pinhas!

Why then does it call him "malakh?"

Rather, said R. Simon,

the face of Pinhas, flamed like a torch when the Holy Spirit rested upon him.

3. The Rabbis said:

What did the wife of Manoah say to him?

"A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of the angel (malakh) of God" (Judg. 13:6).  Evidently, she took him to be a prophet, whereas he was not that but an angel.

4. R. Johanan said: The prophets were called malakhim, because of their essential purpose [as messengers of God].

This is indicated by what is written,

"Then spoke Haggai, the Lord's messenger (malakh) in the Lord's message (malkhut)" (Hag. 1:13).

Thus, we are bound to conclude from this decisive passage that he prophets are called "malakhim."

B. Interpretations of the phrase: "The mighty in strength that fulfill His word:" The rewards for keeping Shemitta

1) "The mighty in strength that fulfill His word" (Ps. 103:20).

Of whom does Scripture speak?

R. Isaac said: Of those that observe the Sabbatical year.

We often find that a man fulfills a precept for one day, for one week, for one month.

But does he perhaps do so for the rest of the days of the year?

Now this man sees his field untilled, his vineyard untilled,

and yet he pays his taxes and does not complain –

have you a mightier man than this?

2) And if you should say:

The verse does not speak of such as observe the Seventh Year, [here is a proof to the contrary].

It is said here, "That fulfill his word" (davar)

and it is said elsewhere, "And this is the manner of (davar) of the release" (Deut. 25:2).

Since by davar used in the latter passage, Scripture means the observance of the Seventh Year,

Here, too, davar means the observance of the Seventh Year.

C. Interpretations of: "That fulfill His word, hearkening unto the voice of His word:" The Greatness of the People of Israel at Mt. Sinai

1) "[those]…that fulfill His word"  (Ps. loc. cit.).

R. Huna in the name of R. Aha said:

Scripture here speaks of Israel, when they stood before Mount Sinai,

who undertook fulfilling before hearkening, having said,

"All that the Lord hath spoken will we fulfill, and hearken" (Ex. 24:7).

D. Conclusion - Parasha Verse

"Hearkening unto the voice of His word.

R. Tanhum b. Hanilai said:

Normally a burden which is heavy for one is light for two,

for two is light for four;

but can a burden too heavy for sixty myriads be light for one?

Now, all Israel were standing before Mount Sinai, and saying:

"If we hear the voice of the Lord…any more, then we shall die" (Deut. 5:22),

whilst Moses heard the voice by himself and remained alive.

You have proof that this is so,

in that out of all of them He called only Moses;

wherefore it is said,

“And the Lord called unto Moses.”
